Hagia Sophia Classical Academy Opens
Hagia Sophia means “Holy Wisdom.” Our purpose, as a wisdom school, is to cultivate young men and women with souls oriented toward the Logos, who is Jesus, the Christ. Academically grounded in the seven Liberal Arts and the four Sciences, Hagia Sophia Classical Academy is committed to providing a fully liberal (liberating) and fully Orthodox education to young people in the Early Grammar, Late Grammar, Dialectic and Rhetoric levels (grades 1 – 12).
Classical Christian Education means “a way of education that has endured for well over two millennia; a way of education that has been cultivated and nurtured by Christianity since the birth of the Church; a way of education that is liberating and timeless.” In other words, it means Orthodox Christian Education in its fullest form. A realistic Orthodox Classical Christian education doesn’t just take place during the school day. It must become a way of life, inspiring young scholars to grow as men and women of virtue and noble character, who live purely, work eagerly, contemplate clearly, listen attentively, discern wisely, reason rightly and articulate accurately.
What is nobler than to rule minds or to mould the character of the young? I consider that he who knows how to form the youthful mind is truly greater than all painters, sculptors, and all others of that sort. – St. John Chrysostom
